A robust
species that is a uniform brownish-black or black (some
have suggested that this species has conspicuous black
markings on the underside of the body – these
are more obvious in juvenile individuals). There is
no anal fin, two small dorsal fins, both with dorsal
spines (the first dorsal is smaller than the second).
It has a short caudal peduncle, and there are patches
of skin near the base of the dorsal fins that have no
denticles.
