The Eriskay
is the only type of Hebridean pony that is still in
existence. This extrememly rare pony is an intelligent,
trainable, versatile animal that is a wonderful pony
for the entire family. It is also a great work animal
on the farm, able to perform tasks such as ploughing
and carring various objects on their backs. The Eriskay
pony is born black, but as it reaches maturity, they
will turn either gray or white. In the winter, they
grow a thick coat to protect them from the elements.
Although it is small, the Eriskay is a hardy animal.
It is considered an endangered native pony and measures
are being taken to ensure it doesn't vanish.
