Fishing Cat Description |
 |
 |
 |
 |
| |
Like a
civet in proportions with a long, stocky body and relatively
short legs, The Fishing Cat is a semiaquatic hunter
of fish, frogs, snakes, water insects, crabs, crayfish,
and shellfish. However, its adaptations to water are
largely behavioral, as its toes are only slightly webbed,
and its teeth are not suitable for grasping slippery
prey. It scoops prey from the water with its paws, often
diving, and sometimes it suddenly surfaces under a water
bird.
The Fishing Cat's coat is grizzled olive-gray with dark
brown spots running along its body.
Drainage of wetlands for agriculture is adversely affecting
this species, which is dependent on water-edge habitats. |
